A classic, satisfying breakfast sandwich featuring a savory sausage patty, a perfectly cooked egg, and melty cheese on a toasted bun. It comes together in just 15 minutes for a homemade morning meal that beats any drive-thru.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 breakfast sausage patties (or links, casings removed)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 4 slices cheese (American, cheddar, or pepper jack)
  • 4 soft sandwich buns, English muffins, or biscuits
  • 1 tablespoon butter, for toasting
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • Optional: maple syrup, hot sauce, or tomato slice for serving

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add sausage patties and cook for 3-4 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Transfer to a plate and tent with foil.
  2. In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Place buns cut-side down in butter and toast for 1-2 minutes until golden. Remove and set aside.
  3. If needed, add a bit more butter or oil to skillet. Crack eggs into skillet. For a diner-style egg, break yolk gently, season with salt and pepper, and cook 2-3 minutes until set. For over-easy, let white set, then flip and cook 30 seconds more.
  4. Place a cheese slice on each toasted bun bottom. Top with a sausage patty, then a cooked egg. Add optional toppings and crown with top bun. Serve immediately.

Notes

For meal prep, cook sausage and eggs ahead and store separately for up to 3 days. Assemble on a freshly toasted bun when ready. Avoid overcrowding the pan for best browning.
