This homemade snack mix is a nostalgic sweet-and-salty treat with vibrant colors. It combines popcorn, cereal, pretzels, and a crunchy syrup coating with red and blue candies for a fun, festive crunch. Perfect for parties, lunchboxes, or a simple homemade snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups plain popcorn (air-popped or plain microwave popcorn)
  • 3 cups crispy rice cereal squares (like Rice Chex)
  • 2 cups small pretzel twists or sticks
  • 1 cup roasted, salted peanuts or almonds
  • 1 cup red candy-coated chocolates (like M&M’s)
  • 1 cup blue candy-coated chocolates
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

Instructions

  1. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  2. In an extra-large bowl, combine the popcorn, cereal, pretzels, and peanuts. Toss gently to mix and set aside.
  3. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the butter, corn syrup, and sugar. Stir constantly until the butter melts and the sugar dissolves.
  4. Once the mixture comes to a steady bubble, let it boil without stirring for exactly 2 minutes.
  5. Remove the pan from the heat and immediately stir in the vanilla extract and baking soda. The mixture will foam up.
  6. Working quickly, pour the hot syrup over the dry ingredients in the large bowl. Use two large spoons or spatulas to toss and fold until everything is evenly coated.
  7. Immediately spread the coated mix onto the prepared baking sheet into an even layer. Let it cool completely at room temperature for at least 1 hour. Do not add the candy yet.
  8. Once the mix is completely cool and hardened, break up any large clumps with your hands. Add the red and blue candies and gently toss to distribute. Store in an airtight container.

Notes

For best results, ensure the mix is completely cool before adding the candy to prevent melting. The syrup is very hot; handle with care. The mix can be made gluten-free or nut-free with simple swaps. Store at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
