This incredibly easy dessert is the ultimate comfort food with minimal effort. Juicy canned peaches bubble beneath a crisp, buttery topping made from yellow cake mix, creating a perfect cobbler-like treat. It’s an ideal dessert for a crowd or a cozy family night.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 (15 oz) cans sliced peaches in heavy syrup, undrained
  • 1 box (15.25 oz) yellow cake mix
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cold and thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Have a 9×13 inch baking dish ready (no need to grease).
  2. Pour both cans of peaches with all their syrup into the baking dish. Spread into an even layer.
  3. Sprinkle the cinnamon and optional nutmeg evenly over the peaches. Gently stir to distribute the spices into the syrup.
  4. Sprinkle the entire box of dry yellow cake mix evenly over the peach layer. Do not stir.
  5. Distribute the thin slices of cold butter evenly over the surface of the dry cake mix, covering as much area as possible.
  6. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the topping is deeply golden brown and the peach filling is bubbling vigorously at the edges.
  7. Let the cake cool for 15 to 20 minutes before serving to allow the filling to thicken slightly. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

For a less sweet version, use peaches in light syrup or juice. A spice cake mix is a great alternative. Do not stir the layers; the dry mix creates the crumbly topping. Cold butter is essential for texture. Letting it cool before serving prevents a runny filling.
