Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or avocado oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely diced
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound lean ground beef (90/10)
  • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • For serving: Soft hamburger buns, buttered and toasted, or cooked rice

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add diced onion and bell pepper. Cook for 5-7 minutes until softened and starting to turn golden.
  2. Add minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Push veggies to the side. Add ground beef to the center and break it up with a spoon. Cook for 5-7 minutes until no pink remains.
  4. Add tomato sauce, ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, brown sugar, chili powder, smoked paprika, and garlic powder. Stir until fully combined.
  5. Reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer gently for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sauce thickens.
  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve warm over toasted buns or rice.

Notes

Do not rush the simmer; it is crucial for flavor and texture. For a leaner version, use ground turkey. The mixture freezes well for up to 3 months.
