A quick and comforting family favorite. Sweet, tender cabbage and savory beef come together in a one-pan wonder that’s perfect for busy weeknights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 small head green cabbage, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 3-4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon neutral oil
  • Green onions, sliced, for garnish
  • Sesame seeds, for garnish
  • Cooked white rice, for serving

Instructions

  1. Thinly slice the cabbage and onion. Mince the garlic and grate the ginger.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, brown sugar, and sesame oil. Set aside.
  3. Heat neutral oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain excess fat if needed.
  4. Push beef to the side. Add onion to the center and cook for 2-3 minutes until softening. Add garlic and ginger and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Add the sliced cabbage to the pan. Pour the sauce over everything. Toss and stir for 5-7 minutes until cabbage is tender-crisp.
  6. Remove from heat. Serve hot over cooked rice, garnished with green onions and sesame seeds.

Notes

For a gluten-free version, use tamari. The cabbage will wilt significantly, so don’t worry if the pan seems full at first. Leftovers reheat well.
