Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 large green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 8 slices provolone cheese
  • 4 hoagie rolls, lightly toasted

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add onions and bell peppers. Cook for 8-10 minutes until soft and starting to caramelize. Add garlic and cook 1 minute more. Transfer to a plate.
  2. Increase heat to medium-high. Add ground beef to the skillet, breaking it up. Cook 5-7 minutes until browned. Drain excess grease if desired.
  3. Reduce heat to medium. Add Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine. Return cooked veggies to skillet and stir. Heat through for 2-3 minutes.
  4. Reduce heat to low. Divide mixture into four portions in the skillet. Place two slices of provolone cheese over each portion. Cover with a lid for 1-2 minutes until cheese is melted.
  5. Scoop one cheesy portion into each toasted hoagie roll. Serve immediately.

Notes

For a more authentic touch, use Cheez Whiz instead of provolone. The beef mixture stores well for meal prep. Avoid overcrowding the pan to ensure proper browning.
