My grandmother always kept a crystal dish of chocolate dipped cherries on her side table, and their glossy sheen promised a moment of pure, simple joy. Today, I’m sharing my version of that memory, using dark chocolate and plump cherries to create a treat that feels both nostalgic and new.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 24 maraschino cherries with stems, well-drained
  • 8 ounces high-quality dark chocolate melting wafers or chopped chocolate bar
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil or vegetable shortening
  • Optional for a classic cordial: 1 cup powdered sugar, 1 1/2 tablespoons maraschino cherry juice, 1 tablespoon softened butter, and 1/8 teaspoon almond extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cherries: If your maraschino cherries are very wet, pat them gently with a paper towel until they are completely dry. Any moisture on the cherry will prevent the chocolate from sticking properly. Leave the stems on; they are your perfect little handles for dipping.
  2. Melt the Chocolate: Combine the chocolate wafers or chopped chocolate with the coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 30-second intervals, stirring thoroughly after each, until the chocolate is smooth and fluid. Alternatively, you can use a double boiler over low heat.
  3. Dip the Cherries: Holding a cherry by its stem, dip it into the melted chocolate, swirling it gently to coat it completely. Let the excess chocolate drip back into the bowl.
  4. Set the Chocolate: Place the dipped cherry onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Repeat with the remaining cherries. Once the tray is full, place it in the refrigerator for about 15-20 minutes, or until the chocolate coating is firm to the touch.

Notes

Store finished chocolate dipped cherries in a single layer in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. For a festive twist, use white chocolate melting wafers instead. The coconut oil helps create a beautifully thin, shiny coating that sets perfectly.
