These patriotic skewers are a quick, no-cook appetizer perfect for summer celebrations. Fresh cherry tomatoes, mozzarella balls, and basil are threaded onto skewers and arranged to resemble an American flag. A drizzle of balsamic glaze and olive oil finishes this simple yet impressive dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pint cherry or grape tomatoes
  • 8 oz fresh mozzarella balls (ciliegine)
  • 1 large bunch fresh basil leaves
  • 2 tbsp balsamic glaze
  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp coarse sea salt
  • 1/4 tsp freshly cracked black pepper

Instructions

  1. Drain mozzarella balls and pat dry with paper towels. Rinse tomatoes and basil, then gently pat basil dry.
  2. Thread each skewer in this order: 1 tomato, 1 mozzarella ball, 1 folded basil leaf. Repeat sequence. Aim for 3 tomatoes, 2 mozzarella balls, and 2 basil leaves per skewer.
  3. On a large rectangular platter, arrange 7 skewers horizontally side-by-side to form stripes.
  4. Place remaining 6 skewers vertically on the left side to create the flag’s blue field. Tuck extra basil leaves into this corner.
  5. Just before serving, lightly drizzle skewers with olive oil, then zig-zag balsamic glaze over top.
  6. Season evenly with coarse sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper.

Notes

For best results, assemble within 1 hour of serving to prevent wilting. Components can be prepped a day ahead and stored separately in the fridge. Soak bamboo skewers in water for 10 minutes if planning to grill.
