Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large loaf brioche or challah bread, cut into 1-inch cubes (about 12 cups)
  • 8 ounces full-fat cream cheese, softened and cut into small cubes
  • 1.5 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 0.5 cup heavy cream
  • 0.5 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.25 cup packed brown sugar
  • 0.25 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 0.5 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Generously butter a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Spread half of the bread cubes in the dish. Scatter the cream cheese cubes and blueberries evenly over the bread. Top with the remaining bread cubes.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, cream, granulated sugar, vanilla, 1 tsp cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.
  4. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread layers. Gently press down on the bread with a spatula to ensure all cubes are soaked.
  5. Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 8 hours, or overnight.
  6. In the morning, preheat oven to 350°F. Let the dish sit at room temperature while the oven heats.
  7. For the topping, mix flour, brown sugar, and 0.5 tsp cinnamon in a small bowl. Cut in the cold butter with a fork or fingers until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle evenly over the casserole.
  8. Bake for 45-55 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the center is set. If the top browns too quickly, tent loosely with foil.
  9. Let cool slightly before serving. Dust with powdered sugar or serve with maple syrup if desired.

Notes

Use day-old or slightly stale bread for best texture. The full overnight soak is essential. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated. For a dairy-light version, use almond milk and plant-based cream cheese.
