These baked turkey meatballs are a lighter, protein-packed comfort food. Gently baked in a rich marinara sauce, they stay incredibly juicy and deliver deep flavor without the heaviness of traditional recipes. Perfect for a cozy weeknight dinner that feels special.

  • 1 ½ pounds lean ground turkey (93/7)
  • ½ cup plain breadcrumbs (Panko or regular)
  • ½ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • ¼ cup finely chopped fresh parsley
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 (24-ounce) jar marinara sauce (or 3 cups homemade)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Fresh basil or parsley, for garnish
  • Cooked pasta, polenta, or crusty bread, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine turkey, breadcrumbs, Parmesan, egg, parsley, garlic, oregano, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently with hands until just combined.
  3. Lightly oil hands. Scoop 1 ½ tablespoons of mixture and roll into a ball, about golf ball size. Repeat to make 20-24 meatballs.
  4. Heat olive oil in a large oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Sear meatballs in batches for 1-2 minutes per side until golden brown (optional but recommended).
  5. Pour marinara sauce over meatballs in the skillet or a 9×13 inch baking dish. Sprinkle with red pepper flakes if using.
  6. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until meatballs reach 165°F internally and sauce is bubbling.
  7. Let rest for 5 minutes. Garnish with fresh herbs and serve over pasta, polenta, or with bread.

Notes

For gluten-free, use gluten-free breadcrumbs. Do not overmix the meatball mixture to avoid toughness. A quick sear before baking adds great flavor and helps the meatballs hold shape. These freeze well for up to 3 months.
